Serengeti Day 1

December 17, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

We left Karatu Cmp at the unearthly hour of 6am to start journey to Serengeti, one of the highlights of my trip to Africa. A 6am departure means a much earlier tearing oneself out of a warm bed for breakfast and ablutions etc.

Luckily, we didnt have to take our tents down as the guys who are organising the safari did this for us.

Camping in the Serengeti.

Arrive at campsite in Serengeti at around 5pm-ish It was raining earlier in the day so the place is a bit muddy but we’ve become used to that. Luckily, the guys who are organising the Safari also erected our tents for us. I don’t know why but we view erecting our tents as a chore whereas it’s not really They’re usually up in a jiffy and it’s great fun hammering in tent pegs. I take my fun where I can get it!

Usually Oasis Overland, the company who runs my trip, organises everything but sometimes offer optional add-ons organised by different companies. The trip to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater was one of these and the Safari company organised everything, including great food.

The difference between this site and others is that it was unfenced and on a wildlife reserve. A wildlife reserve in Africa doesn’t mean somewhere you can find rabbits and deer and the like. No, it means places where there are man-eating animals. We had a safety talk about not straying far from our tents and what to do if we saw big orange eyes reflecting back from the light of our torches. Get straight back to your tent!

We heard that, in the dry season, lions drink from the toilet bowls. Not a sight you want to see in the middle of the night when you’re blearily pointing Percy at the porcelain. No indeed.

We had a very pleasant meal, prepared by the Safari company, in a large dimly lit dining area where huge moths were flying around and the windows were barred to keep wild animals, especially baboons, out.

Then to bed to the accompanying noises of wild Africa.
