Bushcamping at the edge of a farmers field near some crops. We’re heading off to Sierra Leone border tomorrow to spend 4 days in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. It will be our 7th country, I think

The journey here was relatively short and we had a 75 min lunch break in a town on the way called Balahn in the Kindia region. Again, a typical Africa small town full of noise, vitality, energy but also poverty and dirt.

The weather was hot and humid but overcast so no sun, most of the time. We had a picnic lunch sitting on a strange thick grassy looking vegetation. I had some bread leftover from yesterday and some triangles of cheese. The bread was not stale but certainly not as fresh and tasty as yesterday. Evidence, I guess, that the bread is natural and contains no preservatives. I washed it down with a bottle of tonic water. We sat around for the next 40 mins or so watching the Africans while they watched us.

We had a delicious Vietnamese stew for dinner. I had seconds.

A gaggle of local kids crept up on us and just stood watching us set up camp. Like all African kids I’ve met, they were completely well mannered and shy. I gave them a packet of biscuits I had and took some photos of them. They seem delighted.

The mosquitoes were out hunting tonight so I retired to my tent early for safety.
