Atar Campsite
We arrived at our campsite following a long day on the road. We had a problem with a leakage on our drinking water tank on the truck. This meant that cooking, cleaning etc at our designated next bushcamp would be difficult so we decided to continue on the next stop instead, which is this commercial campsite.
Access to the site was difficult but Jordan, our charioteer, managed it will cool aplomb. As we were maneuvering in, I heard a few bangs on the truck and assumed that someone was slapping the sides to indicate stop. Later, it transpired that kids were throwing rocks at us. One of the campervans accompanying us, a Land-rover conversion, has 2 windows broken. This was a bit worrying.
As campsites in Mauritania or Morocco for that matter go, this is a good one. Because we arrived early, we had to camp in a temporary space which was slightly sloping. I work up a few times having slipped down my sleeping mat. I just shimmied back up again. We have an opportunity to move tomorrow when everyone else has left but I might stay where I am. I’ll just raise the end of my bed a little.
The site has hot showers, flushing sit-down toilets, with paper, lights that work, a pleasant sheltered sitting area with tables, armchairs and a hammock. There was even drinking water available.
The cook group made an amazing meal in a short time. It was like Indonesian food. Because of our late arrival, dinner was late. We all went to bed soon after and went spark out almost immediately. I only had my boxers on and used a silk sleeping bag liner to cover myself when the temperature dropped a bit during the night. It wasn’t unpleasantly hot but it certainly was hot.
